The WCFID established in 1971, started out as a group of concerned parents and individuals who wanted to address the lack of services for people with intellectual disability. As a formally constituted NGO, it has a diverse membership base of 200 individuals and organisations that provide services in the intellectual disability sector.

Our Mission To provide support service providers in the intellectual disability sector to ensure a better quality of life for people with intellectual disability.

TRAINING: workshops; on-site training and financial management - governance & mentoring for NGOs. Special programmes include: an accredited carer course; accredited first aid courses and managing behaviour that challenges.
RESOURCE DEVELOPMENT: resources include training and educational material, for example: Understanding intellectual disability – a handbook for families, staff, students and professionals; Learning to use the toilet and the Right to protection–identifying and reporting sexual abuse of children and adults with intellectual disability (available in English, isiXhosa and Afrikaans).
ADVOCACY: Lobbying for the advancement of rights for people with intellectual disability; right to education for children with severe and profound intellectual disability; right to protection and the quality of care initiative for the sector.
