After years of helping animals in the townships, Jillian and Vanessa Cunningham formally started the non-profit Township Animal Rescue (NPO 039-758) in 2004. They rely entirely on donations for their work.
-They run weekly clinics in the townships (Lwandle/Nomzamo) for minor medical treatments
-They transport pets from the townships to local vets for major treatments
-They have put a sterilization program in place
-They rescue the neglected and unwanted pets for which they try and find loving homes.
Donations are vital as they are used for vaccinations, de-worming, de-fleaing, food, special diets, dipping, injections, medications and operations.
The animals that they help do not have access to the basics of food, water or shelter from the elements, and are often found in a pitiful condition, suffering from malnutrition, parasite infestation, disease and / or injury, or worse, have been willfully neglected and abused.
100% of all donations received are used for the benefit of the animals.
Township Animal Rescue transforms the lives of countless animals every day, giving hope to those who otherwise would have none. Their approach is proactive and determined in the face of adversity, and aims at first and foremost giving immediate help those who need it, coupled with educating those who don’t know how to help, and the long term goal of preventing further generations of unnecessary suffering through sterilisation of the animals.
We have the ability to take things into our own hands and change them for the better.
Animals in the South African townships don’t have this luxury… Fortunately, there are passionate people that help these creatures that everyone seems to have forgotten.
