After years of gang warfare, apartheid, drug and alcohol abuse, Kibbutz El-Shammah was established in 1993 to address these ailments. The organisation has various departments engaging the Roodewal Community daily. These include: South Roots - Department of arts and Culture, Gloryland - Pre-school for over 120 children and our Services department which includes: Sewing, TB medication administration, food security garden, Youth at Risk homes, postal services. South Roots works with the youth in Roodewal and they in turn go to other communities locally, nationally and internationally to take the message of hope and reconciliation and multiply the model of community development through the arts.
