Established in 1991, the South African Bone Marrow Registry (SABMR) is the only Registry in South Africa and is responsible for finding matched un-related (non family) donors for children and adults with life threatening bone marrow diseases requiring a stem cell transplant. With a 1 in 100,000 chance of finding a matching donor, the SABMR staff perform highly specialized medical searches both locally and worldwide to find matching donors for South Africans. The SABMR is also responsible for making all the medical and logistical arrangements to ensure that the matched stem cells reach the patient at the time of transplant. The SABMR is a non-profit organisation and relies on the generosity of the public to continue offering its life-saving services.
