Project Flamingo ensures timely surgery for newly diagnosed breast cancer patients – currently achieved by funded catch-up surgery lists performed at both Groote Schuur and Tygerberg Hospitals (paying for theatre time and nursing staff.)
This is to compensate for the tremendous strain on theatre and staff resources that led to a waiting time of up to 10 weeks for surgery in 2010.
We have expanded this to patients urgently requiring surgery for other cancers as well.
Each surgery costs approximately R4000 in nursing and consumable fees with surgeons and anaesthetists donating their time and skill gratis.
We also deliver pamper packs to all newly diagnosed breast cancer patients at the Groote Schuur Hospital Combined Breast Clinic every Wednesday.
A panel of expert clinicians, including surgeons, oncologists, pathologists and radiologists meet with approximately 20 newly diagnosed patients to discuss their diagnosis and treatment plan.
This is a life-changing and traumatic afternoon for these women – handing each woman a pamper pack is an attempt to keep their feminine spirit alive.
