National Youth Development Outreach (known as NYDO), started 30 years ago in the township of Eersterust by a concerned community member Mr. Billy Paulson. The high crime and gangsterism activities effecting the health and safe upbringing of young people in the area was of great concern. He used his profile as a musician within the community with a rich culture of performing arts, to bring young people together and create a safe, positive and alternative space for young people to develop values and become good citizens of South Africa. NYDO developed into a registered NPO, delivering services within social crime prevention space. Delivering Diversion services and crime prevention for the past 19 years. 1995 marked the registration with the Companies and Intellectual Properties Commission (CIPC) of NYDO as a Non-Profit Company without members. The organization continues its work within the township but also reaching out to the neighboring under-resourced, peri urban communities - Mamelodi, Cullinan and Bronkhorstspruit. Influencing communities to participate in musical festivals and Idol’s competitions even in Northern Cape and other provinces. In 2001, the organization registered with Department of Social Development as an NPO and become a service provider in the field of Crime Prevention and Diversion services. NYDO delivers a high standard of Crime Prevention and Diversion services within the framework and prescriptions of the Department through trained and registered social service professionals. The staff have a holistic and unique practice of building good mentor relationships with the individual and his/her family in providing service to children (12 -18 years old) in conflict with the law. The Crime Prevention programme reached out to schools, after-school development centres, service groups and churches through performing art productions, educational presentations, adventure camps and holiday programmes. NYDO relies the value in partnering with like minded stakeholders ensuring opportunities and empowerment opportunities reach children, youth, and families within the communities. Through creating opportunities and developing communities’ members the risk for criminal activities are reduced and diligent, responsible South African citizens are cultivated. An example of this form of partnerships are with Green Deed Recycling. The organization reaches out to youth from the community to become part of a clean and healthy environment. NYDO’s role is to link, encourage and tracking the young people from the community to make use of the opportunity.
