The Lepidopterists' Society of Africa is the only organisation on the continent that is actively involved in the study and conservation of butterflies and moths. We run a Virtual Museum in partnership with the Animal Demographic Unit of the University of Cape Town, and regular Butterfly Census Weeks. Members and the public can submit records and observations, and get identifications - the site logs the geographic locations of the records. We also have the Custodians of Rare and Endangered Lepidoptera (COREL) who are studying the 12 Critically Endangered butterflies (and 1 moth) in our area, and promoting their conservation. This will in future need bursaries for students and capital for purchase of land for reserves. We are hoping to find funding and volunteers to help us with these activities.
