The Legal Resources Centre is an independent, non-profit public interest law centre with offices throughout South Africa. We empower individuals and communities through the law, promoting social justice, championing equality, and realizing the human rights enshrined in the South African Constitution.
Founded in 1979 by 3 activist lawyers; Arthur Chaskalson, Felicia Kentridge, and Geoff Budlender, the LRC fought apartheid through the law and trained young Black lawyers. Post-1994, we upheld constitutional rights, using strategic litigation to advance gender equality, environmental justice, and healthcare access.
The LRC played a key role in abolishing the death penalty, securing antiretrovirals to prevent mother-to-child HIV transmission, and defending the rights of women, girls, and people with disabilities. Today, as South Africa's largest public interest law centre, we continue to champion human rights, promote justice, and hold powerful institutions accountable.
